Beyoncé: 'If I Were A Boy'

There are several reasons why Beyoncé currently sits at the top of the R&B pile, but one of the biggies is her ambition. Just look at the brief for her upcoming album, I Am... Sasha Fierce: two discs, one showcasing her vulnerable, intimate side, the other spotlighting her sassy, uninhibited stage persona. Can you imagine Fergie trying such a thing?

The album's lead single, meanwhile, reveals another reason for her pre-eminence: class. 'If I Were A Boy' has a vocal that's passionate but not overwrought, lyrics that pack an emotional punch and a melody so strong you'll feel you've known it forever. She didn't write it, but as well as having ambition and oodles of class, Beyoncé clearly knows a great song when she hears one.
