Alexandra Burke: 'Hallelujah'

Hallelujah indeed! Alexandra Burke may not be the most unique of propositions, but she was the rightful winner of this year's X Factor - a good mover, at least eight times as charismatic as Leon Jackson and enough of a singer not to embarrass herself next to Beyoncé. Now, having vanquished the boyband who were never quite as good as we wanted them to be and the young Irish lad the whole country's calling "Eggnog", she's saddled with a winner's song that was doubtless intended for Diana Vickers.

Against the odds, however, this is the most listenable X Factor single yet. Nobody really needs to hear another version of 'Hallelujah', but Burke sings it very nicely indeed and the inevitable gospel choir actually highlights the biblical references in Leonard Cohen's lyrics. Fans of the Jeff Buckley reading will probably find this horribly tinselly in comparison, but they'd do well to remember that Simon Cowell currently has something truly heinous locked in his bottom drawer - the Eoghan Quigg version.
