Lisa Mitchell: 'Neopolitan Dreams'

Sadly nothing to do with ice cream flavours, Lisa Mitchell's new single is a sprightly little ditty about young lovers breaking up. So far, so ordinary - but this 17-year-old has led a more interesting life than many. Born in Britain, before moving to Australia at the age of three, she claims to have been raised on Bob Dylan, The Killers and Cat Stevens. After a brief dalliance with reality TV on Australian Idol, Mitchell has relocated to the UK to launch herself as a credible artiste.

Somewhere between the cool-girl pop of Kate Nash and twee indie of Noah And The Whale, Mitchell's soft-spoken, acoustic style is finely-tuned for daytime radio. Sadly, this easily forgettable tune is likely to generate shrugs of indifference rather than smiles. With forgotten indie acts like Turin Brakes and Ed Harcourt among her co-writers, and an ear for a infectious melody, Mitchell clearly has potential. On the other hand, as glamorous and exciting electropop stars like Lady GaGa and Little Boots arrive on the scene, she seems - dare we say it - a bit too nice to stand out.
