Jay Sean: 'Tonight'

When Jay Sean burst onto the music scene back in 2004, he seemed fresh, exciting and innovative. Fusing influences from his British Asian heritage with a contemporary R&B sound, he managed to create an enviable niche for himself, even notching up a pair of top ten hits. After leaving his label due to so-called "musical differences", his return with last year's My Own Way album showed a greater hip-hop influence - as this latest single shows.

Though 'Tonight' benefits from slick production and a reasonably catchy hook, it also suggests that Sean may be suffering from the same syndrome as Craig David. Both artists became popular by making music that reflected their roots, before all too quickly adopting a far more mainstream American R&B sound. A near-cousin to recent Akon singles, 'Tonight' is a distinctively average effort that is unlikely to end Sean's recent hiatus from the top ten.
