Morrissey: 'I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris'

With his 50th birthday coming up and early reports about his new Year Of Refusal album generally positive, fans need not get their hankies out yet. However, the album's lead single - no doubt approved by the French capital's tourist board - finds the crooner treading water musically. His trademark vocals are still in decent fettle, but the lyrics ("In the absence of your smiling face, I travelled all over the place") are unremarkable, covering his favoured topics of loneliness and isolation. A curious choice of single which suggests the fire in Mozza's belly may already be fading.

This is Morrissey blowing away all the rubish bands that exist at the moment. I think that this will be regarded as one of his best long players, and there is nothing to compare.

Moz can still show new-day Indie kids like Bloc Party & The View what real Indie music is about. It's not singing about Ex Girlfriends Fasion and Chip Shops. It's about how people feel and their emotions and reaching out like U2 and The Verve do.

Why is he allowed to release stuff still? I was a huge fan of him in the 80s/90s but good god man call it a day. It's embarrassing watching him perform, a 50 year old man whinging about stuff like he's still a teenager.

In response to Joe from Leeds, I am a massive Smiths fan. Own all the albums, play them regularly, and love them. But you can't really put the whole modern indie scene in a group, yes there's all that lad rock rubbish (e.g. The View, Wombats, Oasis), but there are the good bands (e.g. Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Belle and Sebastian, Sufjan Stevens, Indie Pop and the US indie scene), Bloc Party make music that discusses their emotions and they do it with clever lyrics, and their music tries to experiment with new directions...Morrisey still makes a good song, yet it's no classic. I love all his early solo stuff and the complete Smiths, but this kind of ruins his legacy a bit.
