Erasure: 'Always 2009'

They've never been as cool as Depeche Mode, nor as classy as Pet Shop Boys, but Erasure's camp, catchy take on electropop has served them well for nearly quarter of a century. In fact, later this month they release a whopping 41-track 'Greatest Hits' collection called totalpop!. How many groups - of any denomination - get to do that?

In rather perfunctory fashion, a new version of classic hit 'Always' is being released as a download-only trailer single. The so-called remix is subtle to the point of being imperceptible - the synths are a perhaps little crisper, the bassline's a bit beefier - but then again 'Always' has aged pretty gracefully on its own. A fairly pointless exercise then, but there's no denying that this tune still sounds pretty majestic.
