With endless gongs being handed out to Duffy and Adele, and the media becoming mildly obsessed with the current crop of electropop females, it's easy to presume that the UK music scene is lacking in male talent at the moment. If the Brits panel are turning to old stagers like Paul Weller and Ian Brown for the Best British Male category, something must be amiss. However, propping up this year's Brits list was Will Young, a man who released the best record of his career in 2008.

'Let It Go', which marries some of Young's most revealing lyrics ("I have never been afraid of being alone, it's somehow typical of being a man") with hushed piano and acoustic guitar, tugs at the heartstrings every bit as effectively as his 2003 chart-topper 'Leave Right Now'. Young has struggled of late to repeat his post-Pop Idol chart success, which is a shame because he's come a long way since his Gareth Gates duet and dire Doors cover. If you need reminding that great pop music can also come from people with the XY chromosome, he could well be the answer.

No way has Will lost his energy, vitality or spark - you have to see him performing live at his gigs to see that. LIG is a mournful song, which incidentally was written by Eg White who also wrote Leave Right Now, so that is how he performs it. Self-indulgent it may come across, but it's a very honest album because the lyrics reflect just how his life was at the time, and what else is a singer who writes their own songs going to write about but what is happening around them. I'm sorry some of you don't like it, maybe the new album he is working on will be more to your taste. I'm not taking anything from Paul - he's a legend - but despite reaching the top spot his album hasn't really made a very good showing. Another man who seems to appeal to his hardcore fans now. I resent the inference that I'm ignorant of other music out there. I have a wide ranging taste -from Stevie Wonder to Paul Simon and everything in between and Will and his music sits perfectly there. It would be a very sad world if we all liked the same thing and it's great there is someone for everyone in the music world. I respect other people's taste and expect to be given that same respect.

Got the cd single and it's great! In addition to LIG there are two fantastic live tracks from his album launch at Cadogan Hall. You can complete the set if you download LIG from Itunes or 7digital as there's a live version of LIG from the album launch which is wonderful. For anyone who recognises how good Will is live, these are perfect showcases of his fantastic voice.

Pretty sleep inducing stuff and a world away from Will's earlier style. Drab and boring and not in anyway comparable with the well constructed Leave Right Now. Will's lost his energy, vitality - his spark. It's true what one of the other reviewers wrote - he's far too self indulgent. His die-hard fans may be prepared to follow his lead but he's unlikely to find many new converts which is a shame because beneath it all he is genuinely talented. There's a saying 'variety's the spice of life' - try telling that Will - he appears to have forgotten that a while ago.

My physical copy arrived this morning and I have to say the two live tracks are brilliant. You Don't Know is so very very beautiful & Help Me the Joni Mitchell cover is good too. These are only available on the hard copy so I'm really pleased I ordered it now.

Bearing in mind Will has sold in excess of 340,000 copies of Let It Go (the album) I wouldnt suggest he's losing popularity. Together with a sold out tour and adding extra dates. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but dont just write it off after a few listens - its a grower. Will wrote 11 of the 13 tracks. It is an amazing album - critically acclaimed even! The single itself wont get the air play it so richly deserves and therefore will unlikely be a big hit. Shame that.

Have you listened to 22 Dreams? You are slating "old timers" like Weller and Brown when they practically formed a generation for music. Even today they are making excellent tunes and Paul Wellers album even reached number one. Seems some people are too ignorant to listen to a cd and would rather have x factor or pop idol decide their music tatses...

I agree with Alex Fletcher, this is, I think , Will's best album to date and the title single is a beautiful, thought provoking ballad in true Will style . Surprising then that it is getting so little airplay and Will's recent lack of chart success, which Alex mentions, is surely down to lack of airplay.

Bought LIG album because I quite liked Changes, but was very disappointed. This single is pants and the video even worse. I think there is only one other song on the album that can remotely be called good.

I love this song from Will, very emotive and beautifully sung. The video is a cut above the usual dross on our screens at the moment too.

Lovely review and I must say spot-on as the album it comes from is excellent too. This single is a beautiful song and there are several others on this album equally as good.

Paige - Didn't you know that the same person wrote Leave Right Now and Let It Go? I would have thought with your knowledge of all things Will you would have realised that! Brilliant song, great review - thanks.

Brilliant review of a beautiful, classy song which shows off Wills distinctive & emotive voice to perfection. However there are some other quite different and brilliant songs on this album if you havent heard it you must borrow a copy to hear for yourself

The music charts are dominated by female artists and the 'next big thing' at the moment. Will has been in the industry for 7 years now, and his latest 4th album has gone platinum and heading towards 400,00 sales - maybe more. As for the past year, he had a sell-out tour, performed at festivals and had slots on shows such as X Factor, Question Time etc and he will soon be featured on the South Bank show. As for the single, it is excellent - it will probably not chart well, but Will himself has said he is an 'albums artist' now. The charts this week show his album is back in the Top 40 - 5 months after release which I think is evidence enough that he is still popular.
