Peter Doherty: 'Last Of The English Roses'
It's been a while since we've had occasion to talk about Pete(r) Doherty for his music. However, 2009 could be the year for the singer's fortunes to take an upward turn. He's made up with former Libertine buddy Carl Barat and the red top frenzy that followed him during his relationship with Kate Moss has died down. Most importantly, he's managed to avoid the old Bill long enough to record his eagerly-anticipated solo album - it's called Grace/Wastelands and it's out later this month.

Lead single 'Last Of The English Roses' will remind disheartened fans of why they fell for Doherty in the first place. Based around a simple looped guitar riff, it builds towards a fumbling but sweet indie-pop chorus which finds Pete croaking romantically about his anonymous English Rose. With classic Doherty lyrics about "Kappas", "Reeboks" and dancing the "fruity-tutti" around snooker tables, this song exudes a charm that's so often been absent from his Babyshambles material. He's let down his fans many times before, and it feels slightly ominous to even suggest it, but maybe this time Doherty really is on the road to recovery.
