Röyksopp: 'Happy Up Here'
Shortly after releasing their 2001 debut Melody A.M., Röyksopp were bombarded by hawkish advertisers eager to partner their music with mobile phones, PCs and even car insurance. Some accused the Norwegian duo of selling out, but as a result their ambient, experimental electronica gained exposure far beyond the reaches of the Bergen bars they used to frequent. Eight years on, they're back with a new single that's as ad-friendly as ever.

While their second album The Understanding trailed a lusher, more melodious sound, 'Happy Up Here' sees the band return to familiar territory of robo bleeps, polite synths and ambient vocals. The languid charm that helped their debut shift millions is present and correct, but this feels like a safe single choice from a new album that promises innovative collaborations with the likes of Robyn and Lykke Li. Still, it's easy to picture the bods at Apple hastily assembling a new product just to snap it up.

Safe? Are you mad? It is a demented and wonderful single - here's hoping it does well for them.
