Asher Roth: 'I Love College'

There aren't many high profile white rappers, so it's almost inevitable that Asher Roth's arrival on the scene has been compared to Eminem's. But skin colour is pretty much where the comparisons end. Hailing from the comfortable suburbs of Philadelphia and having studied Elementary Education at university, Roth's background is more American Pie than 8 Mile. It's no surprise, therefore, that his lyrics have been said to focus on "middle-class minutiae".

'I Love College', Roth's first major release, is essentially an anthem written for, and about, the frat house lifestyle portrayed by the likes of Stifler and co. Celebrating the average student existence of drinking, smoking, sleeping during the day and "then doing it all again", 'I Love College' is sure to have wide-reaching appeal. If he keeps coming up with witty, hooky tracks like this, Roth shouldn't find his background impeding his acceptance into the hip-hop fold.
