Eminem: 'We Made You'

Fart sound effects, Jessica Simpson jokes and rubbish, mildly offensive gags about lesbians - it could only really be a comeback single from Marshall Mathers III, couldn't it? After the leak and release of the darker-sounding 'Crack A Bottle', the official lead single from Eminem's much anticipated Relapse LP is a return to his favoured ground of celeb-bashing.

When the rapper was in his early '00s pomp, his lyrics tended to lampoon his contemporaries in witty, well-observed fashion. But here his attacks are either lazy (Britney Spears), out-of-date (Sarah Palin) or just too plain easy (Kim Kardashian) to be enjoyed fully. While it's exciting to know that Team Em & Dre are goofing around in the studio again, there's a limit to our nostalgia for the cheeky rap pair and 'We Made You' gets pretty close. "You think that's bad? You should hear the rest of my album," raps Em after a particularly smutty double entendre. Keep everything crossed that he's only joking.

I always try my best not to like Eminem, but I'm afraid it's not working with this song. Still, it's nothing compared to the glory days of 'Stan'.

I find it amusing that you can review an Eminem track and find the lyrics tired and out-dated. It strikes me that perhaps that isn't the point. I didn't like it at first play, but it's already grown on me. It's classic Eminem. I love it.
