U2: 'Magnificent'
U2 have been making their particular brand of stadium rock for nearly three decades now - a dizzying thought. Their most recent album No Line On The Horizon was primarily produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, who worked on the band's best-loved mid-eighties LPs The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree. It went straight to number one and has already played its role in justifying another of the band's ever-expansive global tours.

But for all the talk of eye-opening trips to Morocco and wild experimentation, second single 'Magnificent' still sounds like classic U2. Unfortunately, this means that it sounds remarkably like Echo & The Bunnymen, but with the rough edges, heart and soul replaced by slick polish and empty bombast. As ever with Bono, the lyrics walk a tightrope between raw simplicity and absurdity, but sadly come off as somewhat trite ("Only love, only love can leave such a mark, but only love, only love unites our hearts"). If you're already a fan of U2, you'll no doubt disagree, but if you've never been a convert, 'Magnificent' will do nothing to change your mind.

This song is great. It's surely about praising Jesus. There are some excellent clips on you tube that team it with great use of relevant images. I saw them in concert in Brisbane a few days ago (Dec 9).What a fantastic concert. Also Check out the clip of the performance from the BBC rooftop. These comments below about tired are rubbish. The energy at live concerts in Australia is amazing. I will be buying this album!

U2 have gotten better with age. Their songs are relevant, passionate and sincere - that's why they are still so loved. Their last few albums have given us some of the band's best music. People are moved by the music. U2 have again done what they do best. They don't need to keep redoing Joshua Tree or stay the same as they were back then. And they are more relevant than how many bands today? Magnificent is magnificent.

2 things - 1. in my opinion, u2 make good music, good songs, good sounds, NOT good lyrics 2. This is probably the best song they've released since before they started to be s**t which was after Zooropa. This might be because Eno and Lanois are involved on this album. Their lyrical content of their music has always been trite - but that's not U2's strength. Their strength is their unique sound, their chemistry which produces music which is immediate and vibrant, and their ability to pick VERY well the people they choose to work with as producers. You can be snooty about it but have you been to a big U2 concert? They're an awesome band, and just as individual as any indie band - also more experimental than most indie bands. Look at their track record - they've created numerous classic records in completely different styles, they've completely changed their sound numerous times. You might be an arthouse critic p***k that's staring at his p***k wishing it would get hard, but U2 have got it musically - they're a vital band, and it still comes through now even though they're old. Echo and the bunnymen? Okay, might be quite safe from an arty point of view, but U2 have a sheer excitement to their sound that the masses respond to for a reason. It's a brave critic that will face up to U2's merits.

WTF? Magnificent is exactly that. Magnificent. You twits who are commenting are musically illiterate or deaf. Sorry, but U2 are still HUGE and relevant and going nowhere.

Not their best song but it's a good one and it's even better than "get on your boots"". The best new rock song from this album has to be "no line on the horizon" and possibly "moment of surrender". Maybe a little out dated album not as experimental as it could be..

Good Review. However, this isn't classic U2, they have had better singles... (ps: the only reason this went to number one was because of the free promo it got on the BBC and the fact that people are pretending to like U2) they'll never get back to the Joshua Tree Days. Ever!

I used to be SUCH a big U2 fan. I only listened to their music and lapped up everything Bono said. Then I took a step back. Their lyrics are appalling most of the time, rhymes for rhymings sake which makes you laugh if you actually listen to them properly. I may listen to Achtung Baby once every so often and a few songs from Zooropa and Pop, but that's it. I bought How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and sold it after playing it once. Simply rubbish. I haven't even bought No Line on the Horizon and heard this single briefly, and enough is enough. It's the same song written and rewritten, Bono makes the same tired noises and Edge plucks the same strings. They've made enough money, if they want to write songs then just keep them to themselves, we've heard it TOO many times before.

Jim, please how can you say U2 even makes decent music anymore? It's more pop than rock these days with a single word or if you're lucky a line repeated over & over to an unchanging beat, aka girls music! Explore rock up until the late 80's to discover music that tells a story & has something to say other than some emotional nonesense!

Just when you think Bono could not get any lamer he raises the bar for being a whining girl. I don’t think he’s really though; otherwise he’d have paid his Irish taxes & given at least half of his fortune to Africa! But no, he wants to convince everyone else to give more.

Jim, Im a massive u2 fan as well, but are you serious when you put this alongside streets? Streets could be U2's best ever tune, whereas Magnificents not even the best song on No Line on the Horizon.

Say what? Magnificent is MAGNIFICENT! How come no one can ever review U2 for the actual music, it always become a review of the band itself? This is one of my fave tracks from No Line...its soaring, epic and emotional. (PS I hate the image verification thing, it always takes numerous attempts aaah!)

The comments here are clearly written by cretinous idiots - U2's 'Magnificent' is a shimmering slice of pure U2 at its very, very best. This will be the tour opener and no mistake. Absolutely immense single - its stands shoulder to shoulder with Where the Streets Have no Name already. Single of the year by a country mile, no contest!

Decent song. However - we have a band with a lousy image c/o a manager who is out of touch with the modern music industry and a singer who has embraced too many tyrants for the liking of so many. ZOOTV is a distant memory much like their credibility. Besides, singles are irrelevant for a band like this.

Middle age rock for middle aged rockers. Boring in the extreme. Who still buys this stuff?
