Reverend & The Makers: 'Silence Is Talking'
If bands sank or swam on their ability to give good quote, Reverend & The Makers would be as big as U2 by now. Frontman Jon McClure isn't one for mincing his words, whether it comes to politics, rival artists or the "satanic" Simon Cowell. However, while McClure's gob is notorious, his band's debut album – 2007's The State Of Things - often lacked the singer's passion and dynamism. Plodding rather than soaring, it failed to live up to expectations after the rabble-rousing breakthrough single 'Heavyweight Champion'.

Thankfully, this teaser single from album number two is more impressive. Built around an infectious brass sample from obscure '70s funk outfit War and a long-lost Charlatans/Happy Mondays groove, 'Silence Is Talking' finds McClure attempting to craft a summer indie-dance anthem with an added political edge - think Question Time if it was hosted in an old Ibiza nightclub. McClure's lyrics about political officials on "the fiddle" are in his usual hackneyed style, but the sun-drenched chorus is so bang on the money it's actually forgivable this time around. If the Makers can match this on their new album, they may soon walk the walk, rather than just talk the talk.
