Mariah Carey: 'Obsessed'

The Voice isn't what it was, as X Factor viewers will know, but Mariah Carey still makes a great, faintly ridiculous popstar. This latest single, the first from the twelfth studio album she's named Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, finds her hitting back at Eminem after the rapper tried to chat her up on his last album by calling her a "c**t".

Carey exacts her revenge by mocking his drug habit, claiming she can "see right through him like he's bathing in Windex", and issuing this rather strained comparative putdown: "I'm the press conference, you a conversation." And the music? Well, it's good enough, an insistent, slightly claustrophobic R&B jam whose chorus is a touch catchier than it first seems. This isn't a great single, but it's the sort of thing only a great, faintly ridiculous popstar could release. Only one called Mariah Carey, really.
