VV Brown: 'Game Over'

Like many a noughties popstar, VV Brown has wowed fans with her fashion sense as well as her music. While her decision to launch the VV Vintage range before releasing a second album could make listeners sceptical about the importance of her records, the catchy doo-wop/pop/soul/indie crossover of early singles 'Crying Blood', 'LEAVE!' and 'Shark In The Water' will have gone some way to pushing such thoughts to the back of the mind. Even the fact that only the latter snuck into the Top 40 doesn't seem to have overly upset Brown, who admits that "it's going to take a while" for her to trouble the Radio 1 playlist.

'Game Over' has a decent chance of outdoing its predecessors commercially, though in truth it isn't quite as good. A stomping break-up rant about a bloke who "never really gave a damn", it falls just shy of the standards set by the more emotionally connected Noisettes while covering much the same modern-retro musical ground. Nevertheless, like the threads in the VV Vintage range, it's brash, stylish and very well put together, and if it doesn't quite grab you by the throat, it still makes a fair swipe at your shoulder before giving it a good old jiggle.
