Cheryl Cole: 'Fight For This Love'

There are plenty of reasons to get excited about Cheryl Cole's solo career. As one fifth of Girls Aloud, she's part-responsible for some of the most exciting pop songs of the past decade ('The Show', 'Biology', 'Call The Shots', the list goes on...). Plus, since landing a job on The X Factor, her profile has rocketed to such an extent that she's now a household name in her own right. Attracting a crack team of collaborators - including will.i.am and Taio Cruz - to work on her upcoming album? No problem for Our Cheryl.

However, rather than aiming for the club-friendly sound of 'I Gotta Feeling' or 'Break Your Heart' (which was originally offered to her), Cole has taken the subtle approach on her first solo single. Helmed by Wayne Wilkins (Beyoncé, Jordin Sparks), 'Fight For This Love' is a midtempo pop-R&B track with subdued, synthy production and an infectious hook that gnaws into the consciousness - albeit after a few listens. It's not groundbreaking stuff and Cole's vocals aren't terribly strong, but thanks to a certain understated charm and lots of X Factor exposure, this should get her solo career off to a winning start.
