Alphabeat: 'The Spell'
There's been a change or three in the Alphabeat camp since we heard from them last. They've switched record labels (goodbye EMI, hello Polydor!), got themselves a glossy new look (well hellooo Stine!), and, most excitingly of all, given their sound a bit of an overhaul. As to the latter, the pictures of Black Box and Corona currently adorning their MySpace page offer a pretty hefty clue.

That's right, Alphabeat have gone '90s dance! Cue clubtastic beats, Stine Bramsen "woah woah"ing like a proper dance diva and housey piano riffs borrowed from fellow Danes Cut 'N' Move. What they haven't changed, thank goodness, is their fondness for an utterly brilliant pop chorus. Remember when your best mate came back after the summer break a bit cooler and more sophisticated than before, but without losing the things that you loved about them in the first place? That's what listening to 'The Spell' is like.

Absolutely top-notch pop song! I love the new image and the new sound and I'm delighted Alphabeat are back! They've lost the Guilty Pleasure tag with this record, in my opinion, but that's always a good thing. Yay Alphabeat!!

Alphabeat are definitely not "a bit cooler" than before. They are pure cheese but filed under guilty pleasure. Not a bad song though.

Agree completely, their sound has evolved subtly but that infectiously giddy sense of fun and pure pop hasn't changed one bit.
