Calvin Harris: 'Flashback'
On his debut album I Created Disco, Calvin Harris cashed in on the public's renewed love affair with '80s pop. With La Roux and Little Boots stealing his thunder in 2009, the skinny Scot has moved on to pastures new, mining the treasure trove of '90s dance music for his second disc Ready For The Weekend.

When Harris gets it right, as on lead single 'I'm Not Alone' or Dizzee collaboration 'Dance Wiv Me', he really knows how to craft a pop hit. Sadly, 'Flashback' isn't in the same ballpark, sounding like an offcut from a duff Ministry of Sound compilation. Sterile beats, a half-hearted chorus and Harris's weak vocal harmonies combine with fundamentally naff results. If you're looking for a reminder of the soulless "super clubs" of the turn of the decade, this will do the job nicely.

great tune and DS should make its mind up - in the album review you highlighted this as having a "catchy chorus" but here say its "half-hearted" - hmmmm half hearted attempt at listening to it me thinks....

The reviewer does not listen to dance music enough to recognise the awesome production & arrangement. Heard it in a club & the place exploded.

What?! I totally disagree, I love this song! It's not the best track, but it's not awful at all. It grows on you, seriously

Perhaps the most ridiculously off the ball review I've read on DigitalSpy EVER. Great track from a great album and recreates the 90s sound nicely.

I love this song, not his best but it reminds me of going to the toilet relaxingly.

I disagree! This is one of the best off his album and is set to be another hit! I love the chorus and I have to admit that his vocals on the verses aren't great but this (like many of Calvin's other songs) is addictive and feel-good. Naff it is not!

are you kidding? this is a wicked tune, one of Calvin's best, an obvious choice of single from the album. he's a genius with beats, the variation and creativity he has - and plain simple ability to make fantastic dance tunes, is up there with the best in the mainstream at the moment in my opinion. we all know he's not the strongest singer in the world, but i think he would rather be in complete control of his lyrics (with which he has got much better since his first album, by the way) and how he sings them, rather than having to draft in another singer for every song, who might want to write their own lyrics. ok there is a female guest vocal, but that's just for one part. there's so many different elements to this song to make it work, i love the piano tune in the intro, and how the beat drops twice, 1 after the other, into the chorus, and back again. awesome video too. anyway, great dance tune!

The review is bang on. Boring, heard it all before. Not for me, not sure why we're having a 90s revival already.

I totally disagree with the review and think it's a total grower, even though it isn't one of Calvin's best tracks - its up there! And definitely a banging club tune.
