Little Boots: 'Earthquake'
It's been a funny old year for Little Boots. Lady GaGa stole the headlines, La Roux scored more chart glory and Florence and her Machine won over the critics. Meanwhile, hotly-tipped Victoria Hesketh has waddled along with only moderate success – neither of her first two singles cracked the top five. It's the right time, therefore, for the Blackpool lass to be releasing one of the prime cuts from her terrific Hands album.

A proper disco-pop stomper, 'Earthquake' has the words "smash hit" oozing out of every synth ripple and vocal echo. However, what makes Boots's brand of sweet pop so endearing is what lies just beneath the electro-fizzy surface. "I know that people change," Hesketh coos here, before adding the bleak, damning refrain: "Maybe you're not to blame, but must you burn a hole, so deep into my soul?" Many more infectious, emotion-laden tunes like this and it won't be long before she has the sales figures to match her early hype.
