Delphic: 'Doubt'
Even before they found their way on to the BBC Sound list, Delphic had plenty going for them. Several critics are tipping their upcoming debut, Acolyte, to be the first great record of the new decade, while their first TV appearance on Later had new band types drooling. Hailing from Manchester and with a penchant for mixing guitars and electronica, they've earned obvious and deserved comparisons with New Order, but rather than simply mine the past Delphic have forged their own definitive and refreshing sound.

New single 'Doubt' may owe a certain debt to Sumner, Hooky and co, but the scatter-shot electronic squelches, hushed vocals and robotic drum loops are actually more akin to recent Bloc Party. However, Delphic have a lighter touch and greater pop leanings than Kele Okereke's gang. Even during the slightly cryptic chorus ("Doubt, in it all for me, I've hit the wall, all that's left for you is doubt, better you than me, I've so far to fall"), there's an immediacy and warmth to the track which suggests that there's more to these Manc upstarts than New Year hype.
