Daniel Evans: 'Open Arms'
When Joe McElderry sang this other Journey tune on last year's X Factor, Simon Cowell was especially impressed with his performance of what he called "a song nobody knows". Now, the follow-up to 'Don't Stop Believin' may not have made a massive splash here back in 1982, but after Mariah Carey covered it in 1995, Britney Spears took it on the road in 1999 and two American Idol contestants had a crack, Cowell's comment shouldn't have rung true. Truth is though, few of us even remembered Daniel Evans singing it on The X Factor as recently as 2008, because despite all that exposure, it's still so very, very dull.

"I think if you recorded that song in the morning, you'd have a No.1 record with it," Louis Walsh told McElderry at the time - and, interventions from agitprop rap-rockers aside, he was probably right. But that has nothing to do with the song itself, which is an overrated, overwrought dirge that's always threatening to slip into a coma. In fairness, Daniel Evans's take on it isn't much worse than anyone else's. The production is restrained but not cheap-sounding, while the realistic Evans turns in a surprisingly comfortable vocal for the most part. The result is far from wonderful, but it really doesn't deserve to do any worse than quite a few X Factor winner's singles.

I like the song. I don't rate the singer. Sob story, not great vocals. Boring. Bland.

I think it's a good rendition of Open Arms, however, it sounds slightly classical and he is more of a pop singer. I would buy the album, but probably not the single.

I actually really like it, I am one for the manufactored pop I must admit but this is a nice change, and you can really feel the emotion in this song :)

I will take that as a compliment. The whole point was to not over produce it and keep it real and emotional, full of heart and soul. So many tracks are overtuned and full of artificial electro, no real instruments, but this was never really going to appeal to lovers of overtuned vocals and electro beats, but everybody has different tastes, fair enough. But give me some credit for doing it completely independently, arranging and putting the whole thing together myself. You got to feel the heart, the soul, the whole range from the delicate to the powerful... Mayer, chill out...x

what song are you reviewing? i can't believe a reviewer who gets paid for there professional opinion, can't appreciate a timeless classic. This is not a taste thing, its about knowing your job, and being able to understand why it is loved. To draw comparisons, i didn't really care for Avitar, but i understand what people liked about it. If you get payed for your reviews, there should be an immediate inquiry, and you should be suspended.
