The Courteeners: 'You Overdid It Doll'
Thanks to that predictable "New Oasis!" tag and frontman Liam Fray's ability to knock out a journo-friendly soundbite, it was inevitable that The Courteeners wound up facing a barrage of sneers when they first appeared back in 2007. While slightly unsure of itself, the group's debut LP, St Jude, was an underrated and brassy offering that suggested the Mancunians had potential to be more than dreary Gallagher knock-offs. However, nothing on there was as blow-yer-socks-off fantastic as 'You Overdid It Doll'.

Here, the frantic guitar jangle has been ditched for a sultry disco groove which points to producer Ed Buller (Suede, Pulp) having plenty of input on their upcoming Falcon LP. With its swirling-yet-massive chorus and hypnotic drum loop, 'YOID' actually comes off as the missing link between grubby indie and prime Kylie. Meanwhile, Liam Fray's natural snarl has morphed into something huskier and more endearing. If the rest of the album is as good as this, there should be nothing to stop The Courteeners having a very big 2010.
