Gabriella Cilmi: 'On A Mission'

Released on Monday, March 8 2010
By Nick Levine, Music Editor
The squiggly-diddly bassline! The Barbarella outfits! The state-of-the-art-circa-1982 keyboard stabs! The legs, oh the legs! The dancers wearing nout but their bras and knickers! The whopping great "I am a woman on a mission" chorus! Hang on... this isn't actually Gabriella Cilmi, is it?

But it is. In an entirely unexpected volte-face, the Aussie songbird has swapped the soul-lite stylings of her 2008 debut for full-on dance-pop - the sort of crowd-pleasing dance-pop designed to get handbags dropping from Dundee to Dunstable. She looks and sounds like she's having a blast. And she pulls it off. Like a bag of Mini Cheddars, 'On A Mission' is instantly satisfying, moreish too and just as cheesy as it needs to be.

It's a real shame in my humble opinion. Is this the difficult second single??? I fear it's pop suicide. Way too different from what we know her for and I reckon she'll lose a chunk of her audience. It's a Quantum leap and maybe it's too far removed from Sweet about me. It's completely cobbled together from Jo Jackon's - Steppin' Out, Donna Summer - I feel love, Van Halen - Jump and Flashdance. All good in their own right but if this is supposed to be a new meal, the ingredients are too obviously separate and they don't gel well in my opinion. She's got more potential than this. Hopefully she'll bounce back. A&R people are not Gods. Hang on in their Cilmi, take a deep breath and find your feet again. I'll give it 2 just to be kind.

Disappointing. After the brilliance of the first album and no, "Sweet About Me" wasn't the only track on it, she has now gone for the standard scantily-clad pop romp, which I fell quite uncomfortable with. I can't imagine this appearing on "Later with Jools Holland"

Uh-huh. She was original. Most artists either change their styles a few albums or years in, but she's only done ONE SONG. >_>

People change their styles, get over it. Even U2 change their style. I really like this song and it's a great song to dance to. All my friends (18, same age as her) love it. Catchy

Oh yeah. I also hate this song. Unfortunately I can now recognise the intro within a few milliseconds. :(

Terrible record. Furthermore, the dramatic change in style proves that she is just a pop muppet. She sings the songs that are given to her.

I can't tell if I like it or think it's ridiculously tacky. Either way it's nothing I expected from Gabriella's comeback, some will say she's sold out but it can't be known until the album is heard...
