Craig David seems to have been on the comeback trail for so long now that his fifth studio album, Signed Sealed Delivered, could well be a case of Last Chance Saloon. Since his The Story Goes... LP disappointed in 2005, David's musical stock has fallen and a Greatest Hits collection released last year suffered the indignity of missing out on the top 40. Clearly realising it's time to take a risk, Southampton's finest has given his new record a twist. Each track is either a cover or reworking of a Motown classic.

So, is taking on the likes of 'Let's Stay Together' and 'Heard It Through The Grapevine' brave or just very foolish? Well, the first chestnut to be given the C.D. treatment is the Four Tops' 'Standing In the Shadows Of Love', which David has duly reimagined as a modern disco number. The Guetta-esque beats are a refreshing change from his usual corny grooves, but sadly his early '00s croon - which has aged as badly as Friends Reunited - is still out in force. He deserves praise for thinking outside the box, but even with that help from the Four Tops, David still sounds out of date and out of sorts.
