Boy George: 'Amazing Grace'

There are countless ways to describe Boy George - '80s legend, gay icon, milliner's wet dream, world's most famous street-sweeper... erm... convicted criminal - but plain old "singer" seems to fall a way down the list. It's a nice surprise, therefore, to see his name on the release slates again with his highest-profile single in years.

The track itself, 'Amazing Grace', finds him in spiritual dance anthem mode, his still-soulful vocals shadowed by a gospel choir and Portuguese singer Ana Lains. Truth be told, this is nothing he hasn't given us before, and it's as cutting edge as a cassette player, but the Boy sounds energised, creatively inspired and - sound the self-help alarm! - at peace with himself. In the light of everything that's passed, that's more than many faithful fans would have hoped for.
