Pendulum: 'Watercolour'

The idea that any 'underground' band who achieve mainstream success must have sold out is so well-worn that it's gone beyond cliché, but former D'n'B headz Pendulum have endured that charge more than most. Their self-conscious return to rockier roots on 2008's In Silico and perceived back-turn on the drum and bass community even prompted scene godfather Goldie to have a public rant about them a couple of years ago - though they've reportedly kissed and made up since then.

However, on the evidence of this lead single, upcoming third album Immersion is unlikely to win any love from the DogsOnAcid purists. Despite a shift back to a more electronic sound, it lacks the in-your-face aggression of 'Slam' or 'Tarantula' or the out-and-out danceability of the other Hold Your Colour singles. Actually, it's a slightly wimpy effort that's really crying out for the sort of bass-heavy remix Pendulum themselves used to specialise in. That said, it's far from unlistenable and the bouncy choruses and silly "raise your fists up" refrain just about save it from the Linkin Park-esque verses.
