Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dogg: 'California Gurls'

Katy Perry hatched 'California Gurls', so the story goes, after watching her friends boppin' 'n' a-boozin' to 'Empire State Of Mind'. "I thought, 'We're not in New York, we're in Los Angeles," the notoriously bicurious one recalled recently, "I decided we needed to make a response." However, where Jigga's city ditty is serious and self-consciously classic-sounding, Perry's ode to the West Coast is almost gleefully shallow.

To that end, it slips lyrics about "sippin' gin and juice", "laying underneath the palm trees" and, erm, "sex on the beach" over a snappy electropop backing that brings to mind Calvin Harris grinding against Ke$ha in a '90s super-club. Not only does it name-check "Snoop Doggy Dogg", but it gives him an entire verse to drool over the gurls of the Golden State. The result? As classy as the titular heroines' outfit of choice - "Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top" - but, thanks to an unstoppable pop chorus and Perry's charismatic vocals, just as easy to fall for. We mean, like, totally head over stilettos.
