By Nick Levine | On this, her second single,
Eliza Doolittle tweets. No, we don't mean that she drops text-based posts of up to 140 characters on her profile page on a popular social networking website. Two thirds into 'Pack Up', the 22-year-old Londoner actually starts singing "tweet tweet tweet..." Quirky? You betcha, but quirkiness is only a problem in pop if it's self-conscious or contrived, and Doolittle's bird impression feels entirely natural and effortless.
As does her decision to build a don't-let-the-haters-bring-you-down anthem around a line from an old World War One marching song. "I'm trying to care a little less / And on Google I only get depressed," she admits on this Spectorish retro-pop toe-tapper, but it's not long before the sample from 'Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit-Bag' kicks in to life-affirming effect. Quirky? You betcha, but the result is also a lovely summery pop song - just one of many lovely summery pop songs on Doolittle's upcoming album.
