Jason Derulo: 'What If'

Jason Derulo's had quite a year. His self-titled debut album's gone gold, he's notched up a trio of ten hits, and now he's aiming to make it four in a row with a track on which - gasp! - he doesn't enthusiastically squeal his name over the intro. Hmm... we wonder if producer JR Rotem had to gag him first?

Anyway, 'What If' is something a little different from the R&B wunderkind, being an emotional piano-driven ballad on which the Auto-Tune button remains firmly switched off. Lyrically it's the classic tale of boy meets girl, boy erases girl from memory to save her life - a story that's told in gloriously OTT fashion in the accompanying video. (We won't be held responsible if you spend the rest of the day questioning why Jase didn't just fetch the goddamn box himself!). Sadly, however, the chorus is a little on the lacklustre side, making this a pleasant MOR pop moment from Derulo, but nothing more, nothing less.
