Katy Perry: 'Firework'

"Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?" asks Katy Perry on the first line of her latest single, a question that does kinda imply she thinks we're cheap, disposable and increasingly outmoded in 2010, thus prompting the riposte, 'Hey, we're not all Big Brother housemates!'

After the opener, however, it soon becomes clear that 'Firework' is back-pat rather than bitch-slap. It's not the Daisy Dukes-in-yer-face romp of 'California Gurls', nor the skintight jeans tease of 'Teenage Dream', but a straight up self-empowerment anthem wrapped in a Coldplay-on-poppers club banger from the Stargate team. Plastic bag? Nah, when the hyowge chorus hits, you'll feel like a Mulberry or an Hermès Birkin.
