Those ironic speechmarks around the original title are long gone, of course, as are any lyrics which don't fit the new theme thrust upon the Dame's doomed love song (bang goes the wonderful "And we kissed / As though nothing could fall"). Then there's the ensemble singing which undermines any charity cover of this ilk - it's impossible to connect with a song when the flow is interrupted by everyone taking their turn to show off every five seconds. However, despite an unnecessary warble or two, the singing isn't the worst of it. What destroys 'Heroes' is a muzak-y arrangement that recalls Snow Patrol at their most soporific. The mesmerising Eno/Visconti-powered Frippery is replaced by wimpy strings, bland guitar chuggery and tacky military drums which culminate in a horribly limp drop-out before the choir-boosted, seemingly never-ending final chorus.
