Pet Shop Boys 'Together'
Tacked onto the end of the end of their Ultimate hits collection, the PSB's newbie can't help feeling, well, a wee bit ordinary. The lyrics? Lacking in vintage Tennantisms. The melodies? Not nearly as elegant as the likes of 'Left To My Own Devices' or 'Love Etc'. The production? Well, let's just say it's no 'New York City Boy'.

However, now teetering on its own two tootsies as a standalone single, it becomes an altogether more enticing proposition. A collaboration with former Xenomania staffer Tim Powell, 'Together' is a big trancey dance-pop thumper with a not inconsiderable chorus and a simple, positive message about romantic solidarity. After a few spins, it actually become pretty anthemic, which makes it a shame that it's set to become the first Pets single since 1984 to miss the top 40 entirely. Let's hope the old "all good things" adage applies solely to the duo's chart record.
