Kelly Clarkson's Walk Away is the fourth single to be released from her album, Breakaway, and seems to follow the same down-with-love sentiments shown in her previous releases of Since U Been Gone and Behind These Hazel Eyes.
The song initially strikes you as something that sounds like it's come out of the same funky drag-club roots that characterises the Scissor Sisters, and yet the initial feeling of suspense which is built up through the short, sharp guitar chords and bitten off words seems to just fade away with the entrance of the actual chorus.
While maintaining an interesting tune, which will almost inevitably become a karaoke hit for its singable quality, the song doesn't really seem to have a drive. Instead an extremely predictable tune seems to allow the listener to coast along without having to really pay any kind of attention to the song.
The lyrics are about a woman reprimanding her boyfriend for failing her in many ways in their relationship by being so unsure in everything and telling him that if he can't give her what she needs then she should just "Walk Away". The thing is, by the intensity of Kelly's voice she could just as easily be singing about a grocery list. There just doesn't seem to be the emotional intensity that is needed to make this song really interesting.
Not to be entirely negative, Kelly has an interesting voice and has definitely tried to go for a soul-singer's vocal intensity with a sort of husky quality to the singing which we have previously seen in Since U Been Gone and it fits well with the style.
The song starts off so well with a fascinating initial verse which slams home the words by sticking with one note and demanding that the listener sits up and pays attention. It is such a pity that the main theme of the song is so unremarkable. The main chorus sounds like so many other attempts at "pop-rock" and very easily fades into the background.
You'll probably love this song if you enjoyed: Charlotte Church's Crazy Chick, Joss Stone's Don't Cha Wanna Ride or Britney Spears' Do Something.

I'm a huge fan of Kelly Clarkson...and went to see her live @ the M.E.N arena in manchester on the 10th of March...she was utterly remarkable when singing live, but I have to agree, walk away is not one of the songs I would have chosen to be released off the album. Beautiful Disaster should be released, along with A Moment like this, Gone and breakaway. Its an amazing album from a 21st century breakthrough artist that demands respect. She's just like the album, new fresh and worth every penny you spend on it! deffo the artist to look out for in 2006 if the new material she sang on tour was anything to go by. Come on kelly...rock on!
