Yasmin 'On My Own'
Pop songs about working goddamn hard, making it against the goddamn odds and becoming goddamn rich and famous are as common as the Wombles' SW19 domicile, particularly if you've got an N-Dubz album (or three) on your iPod. Consequently, this debut single from disc-spinner-cum-crooner Yasmin Shahmir is actually pretty refreshing.

That's because she's singing about reaching for the goddamn stars rather than patting herself on the back for having shot right past them - "And if I fail, at least I know I did it on my own," she admits with a modesty that most wannabe popstars would need blackmailing to feign. Thing is, the track itself - a midtempo trip-hoppy nugget with a stealthily ingratiating chorus and a breakdown Neneh Cherry wouldn't sniff at - suggests failure isn't terribly likely, so we're just going to have to keep our fingers crossed that this humble young lady remembers Take That's ever-prescient advice: "Neeeeever forget…"
