Ren Harvieu: 'Through The Night'
The BBC's Sound of 2012 poll should be taken with a hefty pinch of salt. While it's not the self-fulfilling (and self-serving) nonsense that is the Brits' 'Critic's Choice' gong, bundling together a load of disparate talents as one hypey bunch can often do more harm than good. There's a plus side though, which this year includes the extra exposure for Salford songstress Ren Harvieu, whose profile will likely (and rightly) explode after her nod from Auntie.

'Through The Night' is a simple-but-assured introduction to Harvieu. The hazy visuals and and old school movie-style credit announcing her name in the 4:3 video match up with the sultry vibe of the track itself. Tumbling jazz piano and smoky barroom vocals fill the air as the verses slink neatly between your years like a lost '70s soundtrack number. While the swooshing orchestration of the chorus fails to quite connect in the same way, Ren' spookily stunning covers of the Rolling Stones' 'Sister Morphine' and Roy Orbison's 'Crying' show that she's just one killer hook away from the sort of attention that'll make the fuss from the Beeb look like a warm-up.
