Ladyhawke: 'Black White & Blue' - Single review

During our recent chat with Ladyhawke, the New Zealand star described her forthcoming album as "a little bit darker than my last record". It's a well-worn and often cop-out way for an artist to distinguish their new material from the old; but in Pippa Brown's case, we genuinely can't think of a more appropriate adjective.

"Life inside your head has come undone/ Your soul descent to madness has just begun," she insists in a wholly more devilish and furtive tone than anything on her debut, before topping it off with those wonderfully simple but ludicrously catchy "oh oh ohs" she's so fond of. "On and on through the night and the milky way," she muses on the chorus of dialled-up psychedelia; the result an artist who clearly isn't suffering a case of second album syndrome.
