Simply Red are like those seven-seater 'Multi Person Vehicles' you see in the Ikea car park: comfortable, perennially popular and slightly less exciting than slipping into a coma.

'So Not Over You', the second single from their upcoming Stay LP, could have been recorded by Mick Hucknall and Co at any time during the last 20 years. Its tasteful strings, nondescript drum loop and signposted chorus will be embraced by Radio 2, but anyone who doesn't own a coffee table should steer clear. Miraculously, this most anodyne of records has a sting in its tail: Hucknall still has a genuinely fabulous voice. Who said life was supposed to be fair?
