Remember when Avril Lavigne tried to make it in Hollywood? She dyed her hair blonde, took to wearing - gasp! - a dress and started turning up at film premieres wearing more make-up than Dame Edna. It didn't work: she looked about as comfortable as Elton John in a monastery and the highlight of her acting career remains a voice role in Over The Hedge.
Fortunately, just in the nick of time, she's returned to music with an utterly infectious pop-punk single. 'Girlfriend' sounds like Joan Jett singing 'Mickey': all snarling attitude, driving guitar riffs and chantalong choruses. There's a sneaking suspicion that, at 22, Lavigne is a bit too old to be acting quite this teenage. And, really, there's no excuse for the rap where she tries to rhyme "finger" with, ahem, "better". But who cares? 'Girlfriend' is as big, dumb and likeable as a concussed Labrador.

Avril is great but old avril is better! She is growing up and we can't stop her from doing that i mean come on -_- still i never thought to see avril turn into someone totally different. I have been around since her album 'let go' and what i see now is not really avril...

i LOVE avril of coarse but i keep on thinking of the "old" avril i hate to admit it but i sorta like avril's new song Girlfriend still none of her songs ever seem to catch on to me like the songs from let go and Under my skin it's all like wat hapen to u !?! i thought for once we acctully had a cool "rock pop" star who didn't change everything about her.But hey she's growing up we had to lose her sometime i just didn't think she would throw herself in exchange of another Wanabe Pop star

Girlfriend was the cheesiest, most stereotypical song I have ever heard. Punk, I don't think so. Oh, and as if it couldn't get any worse pink tartan skull and crossbones and bleached blonde hair? She suceeded only in looking cheap and in case you haven't heard the lyrics, newsflash hey hey you you is no lyrical sucess. It might have sold but she has gained no respect but a lot of of brainwashed twelve year olds. It was hardly a modern classic and the repetition was horrific. If this is what hits number one well, enough said.
