There are two types of Meat Loaf single: the ultra-bombastic, mock-operatic belters written by Jim Steinman, and the ultra-bombastic, mock-operatic belters written by someone else who is trying to write like Jim Steinman. 'Cry Over Me', sadly, is an example of the latter.
Penned by Queen of power ballads Diane Warren, who fashioned previous Steinman-alikes 'I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)' and 'Not A Dry Eye In The House', 'Cry Over Me' is melodic rock ballad with orchestral flourishes and an eardrum-assaulting onslaught of power chords. Naturally, the big man sings his nuts off. But just imagine for a second if he didn't: it would be like watching Jordan turn up to a film premiere in a fatsuit. The thought alone's enough to make you weep, isn't it?
