Following their barnstorming headline slot on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury last month, Sheffield indie sensations the Arctic Monkeys release 'Fluorescent Adolescent', the second single from the number one album Favourite Worst Nightmare.
The lyrics mix British seaside humour with sweeping chorus lines, while the tune is a blend of dizzying drums and bouncing bass lines. Reminiscent of fan favourite 'Mardy Bum' from their debut LP Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not, the single is essentially a pop tune with a few cheeky euphemisms about "Mecca Dobbers" and "fishnets" thrown in for good measure.
Turner's idiosyncratic vocals curve beautifully around the wistful cry: "Falling about / You took a left off last laugh lane / You just sounded it out / You're not coming back again," that closes the track as it fades. You can almost hear the tune being bellowed back by thousands of raucous fans at jam-packed arenas already.
