Don’t you just hate Mark Ronson? The DJ/producer is Hollywood 's disc-spinner of choice – he got the party started at the TomKat wedding, you know – and has British pop’s A-list (Lily Allen, Robbie) on speed-dial. What’s more, his Version LP, which reimagines 14 contemporary pop nuggets as hip hop club jams – has made him a star in his own right. The sod.
For the album’s second single, he’s called on Lily Allen to help him turn the Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Oh My God’ into a hash-coated dancehall floorfiller. Over beefy, old-skool beats and a Notting Hill carnival of a horn section, Allen proffers a wonderfully languid vocal with more glottal stops than an episode of Jamie's School Dinners. It offers conclusive proof that Allen – love her or hate her – can get away with just about anything at the moment, while also suggesting that Ronson might just be the most inventive knob-twiddler of our times. The only downside? The nagging sense that it was even more fun for the tuneful twosome to record.
