Never before has an artist displayed such a limited vocal range and achieved such success (with the possible exception of Mike Skinner and The Streets) as Just Jack, aka Jack Allsop.
It was wondered how much longer he could continue for, especially after his saving grace – a funky backing track – seemed to desert him in his last single, ‘Writers Block’. Thankfully, Jack has rediscovered the catchy tunes that helped the success of ‘Glory Days’ and ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ and has, shock horror, finally been introduced to the wondrous world of the backing singer, which helps to add some much needed depth to the lyrics.
It’s a good job too. Ignore the chirpy backing music and that the subject matter of the song is about a rather tumultuous break up. It is a bizarre situation indeed when you find yourself tapping your feet and nodding your head and tapping your feet to such depressing lyrics - “I hate so many things about you, I wouldn’t know where to start”. That Jack manages this is testament to a return to form with this latest single, and offers a ray of hope for the future of the monotone crooner.
