Britney Spears: 'Gimme More'

It could all have been so different. Had Britney Spears' comeback performance at the MTV Video Music Awards been what it should have been – a triumphant statement of intent from the defining popstar of the late nineties and early noughties – we'd all be hailing the return of a musical icon after two-and-a-half years of divorce, rehab and the most infamous barber shop incident since Sweeney Todd. Instead, after a listless embarrassment of a stage show, in which the woman who's been memorising song and dance routines since her Mickey Mouse Club days wasn't even able to remember the words, Spears just seems like a lost little girl: the popstar who's hell-bent on making up for her lost adolescence by playing it out as a 25-year-old mother-of-two.

But somehow, out of personal chaos, pop greatness has emerged. Producer Nate 'Danja' Hills – a protege of hitmaker du jour Timbaland - melds tack-sharp beats and a deliciously scuzzy bassline to create a dancefloor throb that, if you manage to block the VMAs out of your mind, feels devilishly sexy. Spears, meanwhile, gets all 'Slave 4 U' on us, moaning and groaning about "cameras flashing while we're dirty dancing". A telling line, that - even when she's getting jiggy in a nightclub, Spears is thinking about who's watching her and how it's being recorded. As things stand, whether 'Gimme More' is destined to become the last great Britney single, or rather the springboard for the second phase of Spears' career, seems to be entirely up to her.

I think Britney's great and it's such a shame she is going through what she is at her age :(

Although Britney's first performance of this song was not particuarly brilliant and of course with the press in tow it could only be magnified to appear even worse to anyone who might not have had the pleasure of seeing her comeback performance, she still managed to catch the audience with this fun and uptempto track. It has a dirty yet fun feel to it and could still help to bring her back from beyond her celebrity grave yet....just watch this space!

I like the song, also the VMA performance wasn't as "good" as it was meant to be due to a broken heel on her outfit (search youtube for the performance and watch her boots). Plus, her other "leaked" song Piece of Me is much better than Gimme More.

I'm sorry, but have you heard it? It's utter rubbish - it shuffles along for 3 and a half minutes not doing anything, it's a half-arsed attempt by someone who USED to be top of her game.

Oh my god come on!!! It's not that bloody good. Only classic/legendary tunes should be rated 5 stars for God's sake. I'd just about give it 4 stars, and i said just about.

I couldn't agree with your review more. Since hearing it on PerezHilton when it was unfortunately leaked, I've been 'transfixed' by this surprisingly good record from Britney. I wish it all the best and here's hoping #1 will push ever more to get her act into gear.
