The video for 'The Heart Never Lies', McFly's 13th single, neatly illustrates how the perky pop group have managed to survive in these cred-obsessed times. On the one hand, it's the classic boyband-in-the rain promo – doesn't Dougie look cute with his hair all wet! – but, on closer inspection, it's clear that this lot have never been allowed with 50m of Louis Walsh. In fact, with their converse sneakers, skinny ties and fearsomely-brandished guitars, McFly almost look a bit emo.
The tune itself, a heads-up for the boys' upcoming greatest hits collection, finds McFly trading in their usual sixties pop cheekiness for a nice bit of soft rock bombast: the vocals teeter towards the histrionic, Harry drums like a demon and the guitars have a pleasing snarl to them. With its wealth of minor key emoting, it's not a million miles away from Snow Patrol, but McFly's unfailing ability to locate a proper pop chorus saves the day.
