The Mitchell Brothers: 'Michael Jackson'

It's been a while since anyone has associated themselves with Michael Jackson in an attempt to boost their credibility. The only people who hang around the pale-faced, wonky-nosed one these days are bulky-looking security guards and bendy-spoon lover Uri Geller. However, The Mitchell Brothers are paying tribute to a different man, one before the wacky theme parks and courtroom circus took over proceedings. 'Michael Jackson' is a tribute to a man who at one time could fill up any stadium in the world at the tip of his hat, could waltz around the stage like he was on ice and had tunes slicker than Samuel L. Jackson.

So does the tune match the billing? Disappointingly not. The Streets protegees have roped in Calvin Harris to wangle in some squelchy sound effects and irregular glitchy beats, but not even he can save the brothers from hitting several dud notes. The lazy rapping style may suit the more warm and amiable Mike Skinner, but on this upbeat, attempted funk-fest it sounds shoddy and awkward. The lyrical tribute is warm-hearted and the occasional "Owww" vocal raises a wry smile from even the most curmudgeon of listeners, but even these can't lift the track out of the depths of musical mediocrity - something you would never normally associate Jacko with.
