N Dubz are certainly not the sort of kids you'd want moving in next door. You'd imagine they play their music far too loud, have a habit of partying until the wee small hours, and have several unsavoury friends. Their brand of grimy, haunting garage is somewhere between the So Solid Crew, Blazin' Squad comic book gangster nonsense of a few years back and the far more acceptable sounds of UK hip-hop stars Kano and Sway. The hoodies, chav menace and bitter lyrics about disparaging school teachers are not attractive, but N Dubz didn't bag the MOBOs' best newcomer award without having an ear for a half-decent tune.
The haunting piano line and reverberating bass thumps should find themselves on a million kids' ringtones, and the Eminem-aping rap patter is certainly impressive, even though it lacks the wit and intelligence of the US star. The lyrics take a stab at all the folk who are trying to bag a bit of cash off the collective since they shot to fame. While it's far too soon for the group to be bragging about the untold riches of their music careers, their cock-sure attitude and bravado makes a refreshing change from the twee and retiring indie chaps that generally clog the nations airwaves.
