"Fake rabbit, real snake, Terra Firma, TERRA FIRMA!" Remember these fateful words because it's more than likely you'll hear a couple of hundred idiot drunks hollering them at your face at three in the morning at a festival near you next summer. The Young Knives have created the greatest fuzz rock anthem since The Futureheads tore up Kate Bush's 'Hounds Of Love', and boy is it catchy. The lyrics are complete nonsense. They're probably about taking naughty drugs. But don't worry about what your parents will think, because they'll be cracking out the air guitars to thrash along themselves, it's so damn funky.
The track opens with a gentle guitar waltz before Oliver Askew starts whacking his drum pedals and they revert to the rabid, clipped riffs and sloping guitars which saw them catch the eye of some Mercury judges with 2006's Voices Of Animals And Men. The band have progressed from their debut, with producer Tony Doogan adding some layers and textures to their wiry guitars and fattening up their spiky angular riffs. Not that you'll care about such studio trickery. For the first 12 listens you'll probably be too busy bouncing off your walls with child-like glee to even notice. All together now: "Fake rabbit, real snake..."
