The Pigeon Detectives looks like a rock band - massive hair, skinny jeans, etc. They sound like a rock band - loud guitars and a very stupid name. They even have very good friends who are in rock bands - The Kaiser Chiefs. Yet despite all these obvious credentials there's a little feeling in your stomach every time you hear one of their songs that somewhere deep inside your soul, you've lost a little something. The formulaic call-response, the Kooks-lite trite tales of love and loss, the Killers-esque synth effects - it reeks of a record exec's idea of what an indie-rock band should sound like.
'I Found Out' has been released once before, but due to 'popular demand'* (*lack of ethics), they are giving it another whirl. Its snappy guitar riffs and inane pre-school Ramones chorus dashes along professionally and politely but never sparks into anything remotely approaching the anthem you'd imagine its creators believe it to be. The band have just announced a date in Leeds Millennium Square for next summer, so their lifeless pop-rock dishes are obviously pleasing someone. Either that or they fancy playing to a square filled with their namesakes. Pigeons.
