When Victoria Beckham appeared on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show recently to promote 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)' - the first Spice Girls single to feature the full, Gingery line-up in nine years - her sales patter was strangely subdued. "It's very typically Spice Girls," the fashion icon, tabloid staple and incorrigible self-publicist noted. "You can hear even before we start singing that it's a Spice Girls track." Not a single "amazing", "awesome" or, heaven forbid, "major" emerged from her permanently pouting puckers.
Those who never rated Posh's musical instincts might have to eat their words, because her positive-yet-realistic attitude is absolutely spot on. The Spice Girls' comeback single is as hip and modern as Jeremy Clarkson's dress sense: the simple drum loop could have been laid down while they were recording their debut album; the flamenco guitar riffs are pure 'Viva Forever'; and, nine years down the line, Mel C is still taking on all the money notes, adding some real oomph to the middle 8. 'Headlines' won't be the first tune you skip to on the Spice Girls' Greatest Hits album – or, in all honesty, the tenth – but, as its pretty, gently melodic chorus surges gracefully, the feeling that comes over you is unmistakable. Nostalgia's a funny old thing, isn't it?

The Spice Girls are back! 'Headlines' is not their best track but it is nowhere near as bad as people have been making out. Their vocal arrangement is a lot stronger on this record than in previous years. The chorus works well. Its a song to their fans and only their fans, which might have been an error of judgment on their part. It's been ten years so not many teenagers of today will remember the true power of Spice and from this track will have a hard time understanding it.

Spice Girls will always be the best... you lot are just jealous because you never made it big, people always slag them off for one simple reason: they're massive and no one can take it. Love the song girls - you're going to be no.1 :)

I'll be honest, I didn't like the song on first play, but after a few listens and the sexy video, I've been humming it for days. It has a nice 90s feel to it, but a slight update. All the vocals are good and I like the slow start and then the uplifting end, Should be a UK #1 for old time's sake.

The song is bland - it's got nothing about it, just really sappy, pathetic verses and a flat chorus that doesn't affect the listener in the slightest. To be successful now they need to realise that it's not the 90's, its 2007. They need to revamp and change - 'evoultionise' their music to fit the music of today. Maybe they should take some tips from the Backstreet Boys, who were around the same time as they were but the only difference is they're still going strong because they've evolved and made a really awesome new album 'Unbreakable'. So not going too good for the Spice Girls.

Absolutely hate this song. It's the most boring, bland, horrible song I've heard. Geri Halliwell should stick to keeping her abs and leave the song writing to the pros...this song stinks.

They should have waited for George Michael! Headlines is not terrible, but it's pretty bland and boring.

I just love it! So classic... proper POP is back! I'm tired of all this Timbaland-Justin-Beyoncè sound!

I wasn't too keen on this when I first heard it but after a while, it grew on me. It's not their best by any means but it was enough to re-ignite my love for the Spice Girls that was dormant for many years. Only they could pull this song off.
