Like The Police, Maroon 5 are an enormously popular band with a frontman that some people find hard to stomach. It took years of banging on about the rainforest for Sting to register on the world's titometer; all Adam Levine had to do was conduct his life with a slight air of smugness. Life can be cruel sometimes, can't it?

The Police comparisons don't stop there, for Maroon 5 have nicked the bassline from 'Every Breath You Take' for their new single. 'Won't Go Home Without You' deals with similar themes to Sting's pension song, as Levine reels out a series of vaguely sexy observations about intense, obsessive love. "The taste of her breath, I'll never get over, the noises that she made kept me awake," he croons, nasally as ever, before a radio-conquering chorus kicks in. Like the worst elements of The Police's back catalogue, it's as cold, functional and ruthlessly effective as a state-of-the-art refrigerator.
